THIS HOUSE WILL MAKE A GROWN MAN CRY

64 Charlton Avenue West, Hamilton, ON

I know because I did. I first fell in love with this house in 2006 when it was on the market for $330,000 (or close to that). We had just bought our first home a year before that so it seemed crazy (and quite frankly, impulsive) to move again so soon. But as much as I tried to resist,  this century semi had put a spell on me.

By the time I could convince my wife, 64 Charlton had already sold. At that point I hadn't been inside (nor were there many pictures online) so my disappointment was abated. But other admirers weren't so willing to rest on their character craving laurels. In fact, several people felt they had missed out and word quickly got out that this had become 'the one that got away'. ONE that many were willing to pay well over $330,000 for. As a result, less than a year after selling, it was re-listed and quickly sold after a very well attended open house. Pretty sure it sold in the high $500s or low $600s BUT I can't recall exactly as I wasn't in on the bidding. What I do know is the seller made a killing -- and in a very short period of time.

After visiting the open house I wondered how anyone could give up such a magnificent home, even for the right price. The features were simply stunning and one of a kind (truly at a level rarely found preserved in old homes).

The foyer features an ornately carved mahogany staircase whose newel post wraps into a hallway bench that could be straight out of Hogwarts.

The ceilings are (no word of a lie) 13+ feet. Original hardwood is ubiquitous. Plaster medallions, moldings and plinth blocks a-plenty. Soaring pocket doors lead passage to majestic room after room.

And the pieces of resistance are two (must be 10 feet tall) original, church worthy, painted stained glass windows. These alone make purchasing the house worth while.

I'm unsure if this home is back on the market or if the owners just wanted Tom (Vogel Creative photography) to take photos of their prized possession. Guess we'll find out soon. Either when it hits realtor.ca or when you start hearing the sobs of grown men!
